MIXTAPE: Alice Unchained

Here’s another band I “discovered” – which just means I was into them before the mainstream. Can thank MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball for a hand in that. They were onboard very early on. I also saw them on the summer 1991 Clash of the Titans tour opening up for Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth.

I’m partial to the Layne Staley era of the band, but think they’re still pretty solid with the new guy. What they have in their favor is that (just like Van Halen), the rest of the band harmonizes with major backing vocals on nearly every song, so no matter who is handling the lead vocals, it sounds like the band.

Drugs have taken away two of the founding members, including bassist Mike Starr. So your lesson is don’t do drugs.

Included in this mixtape is my Kielbasage enhanced mix for Man in the Box. I took the isolated vocals only track from Studio Multitracks and laid it over the original song in various ways. Pretty much a masterpiece. Enjoy.

MIXTAPE: In The Godflesh

Justin Broadrick was in early Napalm Death before forming Godflesh with G.C. Green. Two guys with a penchant for crushingly heavy music with a decided industrial dance groove. That is how you describe Godflesh. I find you either love GF or hate them, or at least don’t get them. None of my friends growing up liked them. Just me. Undeterred they still have it for me. Interested to hear how their reported new forthcoming album will sound. Return to crushing heavy or go more in the way of electronica with moaning laid over the top? Hoping for the former.
